  • Okudas React to NASA Proposed Budget Cuts

    T'Bonz
    8 Feb 2010 | 1:27 pm
Recently, the proposed budget for NASA was announced and to the disappointment of many, Project Constellation, a six-year, nine billion dollar project which would have led men back to the moon, was not a part of future plans. Star Trek designers Mike and Denise Okuda disagree with the new direction in the space program and have sent a letter to fans, encouraging them to write to President Obama and to their elected representatives in hopes of getting Project Constellation restored. The letter is as follows: Dear Friends, As long-time supporters of real-life space exploration, Denise and I…

The Star Trek Online team describes the parameters of the new MMORPG, released last week, for Star Trek Magazine readers. The key to Star Trek: Online was figuring out what had happened to everyone’s favorite races, then deciding where to go from there. According to Star Trek: Online’s Christine Thompson, there was a “metastory to the game.” “We needed to figure out what happened with the Romulans, the Klingons, the Cardassians, etc.,” she said. “And once we had all those pieces in place, we needed to figure out where they move from there. There are…

    5 Feb 2010 | 4:21 pm
Star Trek XI Co-writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have added even more to their already full plates with word that they are taking on a product based on a comic series published by IDW Publishing. The pair will work on an adaptation of Locke & Key, a comic series written by Joe Hill and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez. Locke & Key is set in the village of Lovecraft and is the story of the Locke family, who move to their estate (Keyhouse), after the murder of the head of the family by a deranged high school student. Keyhouse has “fantastic doors” (opened by special…

One of the appeals to generations of Star Trek fans, like this father and son at a Las Vegas convention, has been its exploration of the question: what does it mean to be human? We begin to explore it ourselves, in the post below.

What It Means To Be Human: Star Trek’s Central QuestionIn a live stream last spring, British science fiction writer Ian R. MacLeod enumerated “8 problems writing about the future.” As summarized by science fiction writer Bruce Sterling, they are:1. Future not dominated by Western culture and its archaic Western concepts of “futurity”2. Future subjects of fiction not “people” as we know human beings today3. Space travel not what we once imagined, and faster-than-light travel flatly impossible4. Science becoming arcane and ultraspecialized, while the nature of reality may well be…

While I mull over "The End of Time," I thought I'd pass on a few of the more interesting bits of news from the real universe. For example, above is an artist's conception of something recently discovered by the Voyager spacecraft: a kind of cloud--30 light years across surrounding the solar system, held together by a magnetic field. It's similar to the magnetic field surrounding the earth itself, and both protect against cosmic radiation. Meanwhile, the Kepler telescope has found some more new celestial objects, both like and unlike planets or stars. Commented one scientist: "The universe…

A Decade of StoryThe past decade saw science fiction and fantasy storytelling come into prominence. A lot of it was bad or questionable, but some of it was among the most compelling storytelling of the decade, reaching the most people and influencing many lives.Among the noteworthy events was the completion of the Star Wars saga and the successful reimagining of Battlestar Galactica. Of course, for many readers of this site, the big event was the fall and rise of Star Trek, largely chronicled in this blog's posts (of which, by the way, this is #1001. Patrick Stewart's knighthood was 1,000.)…

    Capt. Xerox
    23 Dec 2009 | 7:58 pm
A science fiction film has never won the Academy Award for best motion picture, but this year they are expanding the number of nominees from the usual five to ten. That may increase the odds that a genre film gets nominated, but I doubt that any will win. Hollywood trade magazine Variety wrote recently about the possiblity of a science fiction film taking the top honour this year. In the end, they concluded that the odds were long. That didn't stop a bevy of commentators from weighing in on which sci-fi films they thought would merit the nomination. Movies like Moon, District 9, Avatar,…

It's not the only sci-fi ornament they are selling this holiday season. They've got a complete line of Star Wars and Star Trek ornaments. Probably the oddest of the lot is this one from the Trek episode The Menagerie which depicts Capt. Pike in his iron lung, or whatever the heck that box is that he lives in. They've also got a bunch of other genre-related ornaments like this Twilight Zone TV and even an old…

So Harlan Ellison has publicly offered his services to write the script for the next Star Trek movie. I'm sure the folks at Paramount, who he just sued, are going to be glad to hand over the keys to the franchise. That was sarcasm, in case you didn't notice. Maybe Ellison would be better off contacting Disney who want to film a remake of The Black Hole. More interesting Star Trek news is the story that they recently discovered an early pilot of the series that was believed to be lost. A German collector offered the film to Paramount and they plan to release it in a future Blu-ray…

This peice is titled "Captain Kirk" but has no date. It appears to be a ST: TMP uniform, though the other three pieces the seller had for sale (Sulu, Chekov and the bar alien) are all from Star Trek III.While my bid was higher than the $ 1,136 I paid, I am surprised it went this low. Once again, mostly unspectacular pieces, but one item stands out, the Shuttlecraft Nacelle. The only problem is it is 31' long! This falls under "The Law of Big props" as I call it. Basiclaly, the bigger the prop, the less people interested, because 1) less people can afford it and 2) few people can store it!So I am not sure who is going to buy this, but I doubt it gets big bucks. Like another of Fringe's mythology episodes this season ("Momentum Deferred"), I was a little disappointed in "Jacksonville." I thought it was slow, and the resolution of the plot was obvious fairly early on. I think one reason I'm harder on this season's mythology shows is that the quality of Fringe's standalone episodes has risen so much. Last season, The mythology eps were head-and-shoulders above the standalone ones. This season that's not the case. What did you think?
